För att spela Virtual Console- och WiiWare-spel måste du ha en Wii-konsol eller en Wii U-konsol och om du vill spela DSiWare-spel måste du ha en Nintendo DSi-konsol*,en Nintendo 3DS-konsol (vanlig eller XL), New Nintendo 3DS-konsol (vanlig eller XL) eller en Nintendo 2DS-konsol, och den måste ha en fungerande bredbandsanslutning till Internet. Virtual Console- och WiiWare-spel betalas i Wii Points och DSiWare i DSi Points, en valuta som bara gäller i Wii Shop Channel och DSi Shop. För att skaffa Wii Points måste du antingen köpa ett Nintendo Points Card ute i butik, eller köpa Wii Points direkt i Wii Shop Channel med VISA- eller Mastercard-kort.
